Shamrock Shake Recipe Tips

I know, how hard can making a shake be? Itโ€™s simple, but Iโ€™ve learned a few small tips that make the consistency and flavor perfect every time.

  • Donโ€™t over-blend: Blend just enough to make it smooth and creamy.
  • Soften the ice cream: Let it sit out for a few minutes to make scooping easier. Donโ€™t let it melt too much, or the shake wonโ€™t be as thick.
  • Chill the glasses: Put them in the freezer for a few minutes to keep the shake cold.
  • Use a strong blender: A high-powered blender makes the shake extra smooth. If yours isnโ€™t strong, blend longer or add a little more milk.
All the ingredients go into the blender.

Shamrock Shake Topping Ideas

Take your Shamrock Shake to the next level with these delicious toppings:

  • Whipped cream: A fluffy, creamy finish.
  • Chocolate sauce: Drizzle with hot fudge, cocoa, or chocolate shavings.
  • Green sprinkles: Fun and festive!
  • Crushed cookies: Sprinkle crushed Oreos or Thin Mints for crunch.
Shamrock Shake blended and ready to serve.

Variations

  • Oreo Shamrock Shake Recipe: Blend 2-4 Mint Oreos (or Thin Mints!) for a chocolatey crunch.
  • Chocolate Mint Shake: Drizzle hot fudge sauce inside the glass and blend in a few chocolate chips.

Storage

For the best texture, enjoy your Shamrock Shake right away. If needed, store it in the freezer briefly, but this may affect its smooth, creamy consistency.

Equipment

Ingredients

  • 3 cups vanilla bean ice cream packed; this is about half of a 1.4-liter container
  • 1 cup milk I like whole milk
  • 1/2 up to 1 full teaspoon pure mint extract see note 2
  • 1/16 teaspoon salt
  • Green food coloring optional, for green coloring
  • Whipped cream optional, for topping

Instructionsย

  • In a high-powered blender, combine the ice cream, milk, mint extract, salt, and a few drops of green food coloring. Blend until smooth and creamy. Donโ€™t over-blend, or the shake will become too thin! Add more mint extract if you want a stronger mint flavor.
  • Pour into glasses and top with whipped cream and enjoy!
Final step! Please let us know how it was by leaving a review.

Recipe Notes

Note 1: A high-powered blender (like Blendtecยฎ or Vitamixยฎ) works best. Standard blenders may struggle with thick ice cream.
Note 2: Different brands vary in intensity. Start with ยฝ teaspoon and add more if needed. Use pure mint extract (not imitation) and avoid peppermint extractโ€”it has a different flavor.
Storage: Shamrock Shakes are best enjoyed immediately. If needed, you can freeze them for a short time, but the texture may change.

I made these tonight for St. Patrickโ€™s Day dessert, & they were SO good & refreshing! Way better than McDโ€™s. I followed the super easy recipe exactly. 1/2 tsp mint extract was perfect, & the green color was perfect!
