Grilled, Gooey, and Glorious (And Ready in Just 10 Minutes!)
This Ham and Cheese Sandwich is everything I love in a quick lunchโeasy, melty, and packed full of flavor. With just a few ingredients, it comes together in about 10 minutes. A little mayo, mustard, and seasoning take it over the top. No fancy equipment, just simple and delicious!
Iโve tried and tested hundreds of ham and cheese sandwiches over the years, but this is the one I always come back to. This sandwich may be classic, but small upgradesโlike toasting both sides of the bread and layering flavorsโmake a big difference. Whether youโre short on time or just want something comforting, this one delivers.

Ingredients
- Whole grain bread: I love the nutty taste of whole grain bread with these ingredients, but feel free to use your favorite bread! Soft white Texas Toast is another great option.
- Unsalted butter: Use very soft butter for easy spreading. I like to use butter left at room temperature in a crock.
- Salt and garlic powder: Sprinkle on just a little for a delicious flavor boost.
- Mayo: Adds a nice creaminess to the sandwich. Full-fat for the most flavor, but low-fat works too.
- Country mustard: Adds a delicious tangy kick that goes well with the ham and cheddar. If you arenโt a fan, you can leave it out.
- Sharp Cheddar cheese: Melts well and tastes rich. Be sure to get sharp Cheddar for the best flavor.
- Deli ham: Thin slices work best; you can specifically request this from the deli. A good smoked ham will deliver the most flavor.

How to Make A Ham and Cheese Sandwich
- Butter: Spread on both sides of bread slices. Sprinkle garlic powder outside and salt inside.
- Heat: Warm skillet on medium-low (or set griddle to 275ยฐF).
- Toast: Cook bread in skillet for 1 minute.
- Flip: Turn bread over, spread mayo on the inside of one slice and mustard on the inside of the other.
- Layer: Add cheese and ham on top of the mayo, then top with the other slice of bread.
- Cook: Heat for 3 minutes, flip, and cook for another 2-4 minutes until golden and cheese melts.
