Chocolate For Breakfast? Yes Please!
Overnight oats were one of my go-to breakfasts in college. Mornings were always chaotic. I was usually running between classes, studying, and trying to grab something filling before heading out the door.
I started making overnight oats because they were quick and easy, but the version I kept coming back to was always the chocolate one. Something about chocolate in the morning just made the day feel a little more fun.
Years later I started making them again for my kids, and this Brownie Batter Overnight Oats recipe quickly became a favorite. I mean, what kid is going to complain about chocolate for breakfast?
The combination of cocoa powder, chocolate milk, and almond butter gives these oats a deep chocolate flavor that really does taste like brownie batter. They are thick, creamy, and packed with flavor.
Brownie Batter Overnight Oats
Overnight oats was one of my staple meals in college โ extra chocolatey and packed with protein! With all the studying and running from one class to the next a filling breakfast was a must.
Now I make these for my kiddos, and they love them. I mean what kid doesnโt love chocolate for breakfast?!ย

Brownie Batter Overnight Oats Ingredients
- Almond butter: Use a slow-roasted, lightly salted almond butter for the best flavor.
- Chocolate almond milk: Any milk will work here but I love chocolate almond milk best!
- Old-fashioned oats: Steel-cut oats and quick oats donโt work the same.
- Maple syrup: Liquid stevia works too, starting with 1/4 tsp and adjusting to taste.
- Special Darkยฎ Cocoa Powder: Any Dutch cocoa powder works, but Hersheyโs Special Dark is easy to find at most stores.
- Greekย yogurt: Use your favorite Greek Yogurt. I love honey vanilla Greek Gods.

Toppings
Overnight oats are delicious without any toppings, so donโt feel like you need to add something before eating these.
That said, if youโre feeling like something extra, we love a sprinkle of chocolate chips and even a swirl of almond butter as a topping. For these pictures I did break up a brownie protein bar which was a fun, but itโs not a necessary topping for Brownie Batter Overnight Oats.

Brownie Batter Overnight Oats notes
- Overnight oats are meant to be eaten cold in the morning. As they soak overnight, they become soft, luscious, and creamy. That said, if you prefer them warm, you can certainly warm them up in the morning either on the stovetop or in the microwave.
- Choose your serving size. This recipe makes one large serving for a big (and filling) breakfast. If youโre looking for a lighter breakfast or a snack option, just eat half of the recipe and save the other half for later.
Quick Tip
Just because these are called overnight oats, that doesnโt mean you have to let them chill overnight. You can make โovernightโ oats in the morning to enjoy. I actually prefer them this way! Nowadays, I usually make them first thing when I wake up, then Iย go work out and enjoy them post workout. (So theyโve sat about 30-45 minutes โ very similar to muesli!).

Iโm curious as to how you got 331 cal per serving when this only makes one serving. The oats alone or 150 cal for half a cup A tablespoon of almond butter is 100 cals, I went with a lower sugar lower calorie yogurt than you use and itโs still 80 cal and those three ingredients alone already total almost exactly 331 cal. That doesnโt include the cocoa powder, the vanilla, maple syrup or the milk.
Am I missing something?
Sorry about that Amber, Iโve updated the calories to be more accurate! Thanks!
my kids didnโt like it but I loved it. They just ate the chocolate chips on top! These picky kids, I wish they werent so darn picky.
Haha! So hard with picky palates! Glad you enjoyed though ๐
I love this! Why can you not substitute peanut butter? I am not a fan of the taste of almond butter ๐
You can if you really want, but it will be a peanut butter flavored oats and not so much chocolate/brownie batter flavored. ๐ The almond butter allows for the chocolate flavors to really shine through.
Thank you!
Uhโฆnoโฆyou are NOT the only brownie addict around!!!!! =-) These sounds AWESOME!!!!! Gonna have giveโem a try!!! Hugsโฆ
