The Sliders I Make When I Need a Guaranteed Hit!

The first time I made a traditional Monte Cristo sandwich, I was completely sold on the flavor but not on the process. Dipping each sandwich in egg, standing over the stove, flipping, frying, and repeating felt like a lot for something that disappears in minutes. I kept thinking there had to be an easier way to get that same sweet and savory magic without turning my kitchen into a short order diner.

That’s when I tested this Monte Cristo Sliders Recipe the way I make my favorite baked sliders, layering everything onto soft Hawaiian rolls, brushing them with a buttery Dijon mixture, and baking the whole pan at once.

The result was even better than I hoped. The tops turn golden and lightly crisp, the Swiss melts perfectly into the ham and turkey, and once they’re dusted with powdered sugar and served with berry jam, they taste just like the classic diner version. Just easier, faster, and perfect for feeding a crowd.

Monte Cristo Sliders Recipe Ingredients

IngredientTips & Swaps
Hawaiian Sweet RollsThe sweetness is important. Regular dinner rolls work, but you’ll lose that classic Monte Cristo flavor.
Deli HamHoney ham or Black Forest ham both work beautifully. Ask for thin slices so the layers aren’t bulky.
Smoked TurkeySmoked gives the best flavor contrast. Oven roasted works too if that’s what you have.
Baby Swiss CheeseMelts smoothly and has mild flavor. Regular Swiss or even Gruyère works if you want deeper flavor.
Dijon MustardUse Dijon, not yellow mustard. A good quality Dijon makes a big difference.
Raspberry JamIf you’ve tried my Oatmeal Jam Bars, you know how much I love Bonne Maman’s jams.

What Does This Monte Cristo Sliders Recipe Taste Like?

A Monte Cristo recipe combines the elements of sweet and savory in an unforgettable way.

Think — a combination of a toasted ham and cheese sandwich with French toast.

We’ve got the sweet elements from the French toast aspect of these sliders (the egg custard, powdered sugar, and jam) with savory and salty notes from the ham, turkey, and Swiss.

How To Make Monte Cristo Sliders Recipe

  • Separate the rolls. Using a sharp, serrated knife, slice the whole package of rolls in half without separating, so you have a top and bottom slab— you want the bottom slightly thicker than the top.
  • Make the Dijon spread. Only two ingredients — Dijon mustard and butter. Spread this on the inside layers of both slabs of rolls — yum!
  • Add cheese and meat. Put down a layer of cheese, a layer of ham, a layer of turkey, and another layer of cheese. Top with the other half of the rolls.
  • Make buttery topping. Whisk together some melted butter and an egg then brush over the rolls.
  • Bake. Cover the rolls and bake! Slice ’em up and enjoy these hot Monte Cristo Sliders straight out of the oven!

Storage

Monte Cristo Sliders Recipe Leftovers?

Enjoy these sliders right out of the oven with nicely crisped rolls and perfectly melted cheese.

For leftovers, allow the sandwiches to cool to room temperature and then store them in air-tight containers in the fridge. (Monte Cristo Sliders do get softer and slightly soggy each day they sit in the fridge.)

FAQ: Can I Freeze Monte Cristo Sliders?

While texturally they are slightly different, it still works well. Prepare the sliders up to the step of covering them with a glaze, but don’t bake. Wrap the 9×13-inch pan tightly with plastic wrap a few times and store it in an airtight container in the freezer. Freeze for 3-6 months. When ready to eat, thaw in the fridge overnight and bake as directed.

Monte Cristo Siders Recipe

This Monte Cristo Sliders Recipe is an easier twist on the classic Monte Cristo Sandwich! Hawaiian rolls loaded with Swiss, ham, and turkey are baked in a rich egg custard, dusted with powdered sugar, and served with berry jam!
Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cook Time: 25 minutes
Total Time: 35 minutes
Servings: 12 sliders

Ingredients

  • Cooking spray
  • 1 (12-count) package Hawaiian sweet dinner rolls
  • 8 ounces deli ham honey ham or Black Forest ham
  • 8 to 9 ounces deli smoked turkey thinly sliced
  • 8 ounces baby Swiss cheese thinly sliced
  • 3 tablespoons Dijon-style mustard see note 1
  • 1 large egg
  • 6 tablespoons unsalted butter divided
  • Powdered sugar for topping
  • Raspberry jam or strawberry or blackberry, for serving

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 400°F and generously spray a 9×13-inch baking dish with cooking spray. Set aside.
  • Unwrap rolls and use a sharp serrated/bread knife to slice the entire package of rolls in half while keeping individual rolls intact. This will form two slabs of rolls. Place the bottom half of the rolls in the prepared pan.
  • In a small bowl, combine the Dijon and 3 tbsp of melted and cooled butter. Briskly mix until smooth, then spread half the mustard mixture over the bottom half of the rolls in the baking pan. On the cut side of the top half of the rolls, spread the rest of the mixture evenly on top.
  • Evenly top the mustard-covered rolls with half the Swiss cheese slices. Add ham on top, then turkey. Finish with the remaining cheese slices. Gently press down into an even layer. Add the top slab of the rolls on top.
  • In another small bowl, add the remaining 3 tablespoons of melted butter and the egg. Briskly whisk until smooth. Use a pastry brush to brush the mixture over the top and sides of the rolls. (It’s ok if there is a little left over. Don’t feel like you have to use it all—I usually have about 2 tbsp left.)
  • Loosely cover the pan with foil (avoiding contact with the rolls—use toothpicks if needed). Bake at 20 minutes, then uncover and bake for another 5–10 minutes until golden and cheese is melted. Let stand for 5 minutes before slicing with a sharp knife.
  • Sprinkle powdered sugar over the top, if desired, and serve hot with jam on the side.

Recipe Notes

Note 1: Make sure you use Dijon, not yellow mustard. The better the quality of Dijon, the better the flavor. Some brands are more pungent than others. I love Grey Poupon® best.
Storage: Allow the sandwiches to cool to room temperature, then store in airtight containers in the fridge, though they’re best enjoyed immediately. They get softer and slightly soggy each day they sit in the fridge.

Tried these and they were great! Question? Can we spread the jelly on and bake as well? Trying to make it easier for a potluck. Thanks!

Made these over the weekend for a party and they were a HUGE hit! I doubled the recipe and made a few different ones, swapping out swiss for havarti. They disappeared!

I can’t wait for her to try! You can just spread melted butter and omit the mustard!

I was just going to ask that. I am not a fan of mustard either.
